Yet Chernobyl was less lethal than commonly believed. One of the plant’s Soviet-designed RBMK-1000 reactors exploded, releasing radiation into the atmosphere for ten days and exposing millions of people to the invisible pollutant. The nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in 1986 is the worst in the history of nuclear energy. Yet even if Indian Point suffered a meltdown due to an earthquake or human error, the three most relevant examples of nuclear accidents in civilian nuclear energy don’t support the conclusion that Indian Point threatened New York City. None of this guarantees, of course, that a worst-case scenario could not happen. It safely reopened within a few months after a thorough NRC inspection. The North Anna plant in Virginia was struck by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in 2011 that led to more ground acceleration than the plant was designed to endure, yet the plant suffered no significant damage. The NRC revisited this conclusion in 2009 and conducted a complementary review after Fukushima and reconfirmed it: Indian Point was realistically earthquake-proof.Įven when an earthquake’s impact exceeds what a plant is built for, that doesn’t necessarily mean a meltdown will occur. reactors, held 18 months of administrative proceedings and concluded that the plant was designed to tolerate even the most severe earthquake that could hit the area. When Indian Point was originally licensed, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which ensures the safety of all U.S. The fear of a natural disaster-in this case, an earthquake-sending radiation to the Big Apple is understandable, but the Hudson River Valley does not experience cataclysmic earthquakes like the one that caused the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011, and reactors like Indian Point are designed to withstand, and often do withstand, some seismic activity. The state’s other three operating nuclear plants, which he did not attempt to close, are located in rural areas near Lake Ontario. Cuomo’s top concern was the proximity of Indian Point to New York City. Nuclear plants provide more jobs per unit of energy generated than any other power source and pay 30 percent higher salaries than the local average. Indian Point directly employed 1,000 people the promised positions from renewable energy and energy efficiency have not materialized. Pledges made to workers of “new, well-paying jobs in the region” didn’t pan out, either. This result was predictable: nearly everywhere nuclear plants are shut down, fossil-fuel use rises. New York’s natural gas generation jumped from 35 percent to 39 percent, triggering new gas generation downstate. In the first full month after closure, New York’s carbon emissions from in-state generation rose 35 percent. Indian Point was mostly replaced with natural gas, not renewables. It’s striking to consider the many ways in which supporters of the move were wrong. Claims of environmental harm fall apart upon examination, while dreams of replacing Indian Point’s nuclear power with solar, wind, efficiency gains, and Canadian hydropower haven’t become reality. Yet the closure of Indian Point was a serious mistake. Advocates claimed that strontium leaking from the plant was found in local fish, said that the plant’s thermal cooling structure killed 2 million fish annually, and criticized its once-through cooling system for consuming, heating, and discharging up to 2.5 billion gallons of water per day. Much of the environmental movement backed Cuomo, with Hudson River protection organization Riverkeeper joining the decommissioning negotiations and citing the numerous radioactive isotopes emitted from Indian Point as a key reason for the plant’s closure. Environmentalists asserted that the plant was polluting the river. New York’s then-governor, Andrew Cuomo, touted the shutdown as a major victory for state residents, “ending the threat the plant has long-posed to an area that is vitally important to our state, the nation, and the world.”Ĭuomo believed that Indian Point, located within 50 miles of New York City, would not be able to withstand earthquakes that it could suffer meltdowns like those at Chernobyl, Fukushima, or Three Mile Island and that it could be sabotaged by terrorists. This final closure (the plant’s first reactor was shuttered in 1974, the second in 2020) brought to an end a decades-long saga over the 2,000-megawatt behemoth on the Hudson River. Two years ago, on April 30, 2021, the final reactor at New York’s Indian Point nuclear power plant ceased operation. 8/11/2023 0 Comments Tal dorei reborn vox machinaExpanded character options, including 9 subclasses and 5 backgrounds.A guide to each major region, with story hooks to fuel your campaign. The adventure begins here!Ĭontents: The physical and PDF version of Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn both present 280 art-filled pages of rich lore and playable 5th edition content, encompassing everything you need to unlock Tal’Dorei for your own: Explore dazzling new subclasses and backgrounds in your epic adventures in the world of Exandria™ and beyond! So, what exactly is a carbon footprint? According to Mike Berners-Lee, a professor at Lancaster University in the UK and author of The Carbon Footprint of Everything, it is “the sum total of all the greenhouse gas emissions that had to take place in order for a product to be produced or for an activity to take place.”įor most consumers in developed countries, these products and activities tend to fall into four principal categories: household energy use, transport, food, and everything else, which is mostly the products we buy, from utensils to clothes to cars to television sets.Įach of these activities and products has its own footprint a person’s carbon footprint is the combined total of the products they buy and use, the activities they undertake, and so on. But while the concept is gaining traction-Googling “How do I reduce my carbon footprint?” yields almost 27 million responses-it is not always fully understood. One way to gain a quantifiable understanding of the impacts of our actions, for good and bad, is through what is known as a carbon footprint. It can be hard to make a connection between our everyday lives and the survival of polar bears, let alone how we as individuals can help turn the situation around. But the scale of the problems it causes-from wildfires to melting glaciers to droughts-can seem utterly overwhelming. As awareness of climate change grows, so does the desire to do something about it. 8/11/2023 0 Comments Essential jiu jitsu movesWalder titles his work Essential BJJ, which indicates that it is going to be a review of the fundamentals. Walder has a few strange ones, like the description of ‘cage fighting’ as a ‘UFC event’, but it’s a step in the right direction. BJJ terminology is rather fluid, and it also has to cope with an extremely intricate set of techniques: hence why I made sure to include my own glossary back when I first began writing a BJJ blog. I preferred Walder's glossary, a great idea I haven't seen in any other BJJ book (though of course I don't own them all, so it may well be more common than I imagine). The old story about Helio being so sickly and frail that he had to learn BJJ in a purely visual fashion also pops up, but that’s understandable given Walder’s time at the Gracie Academy in Torrance. Still, this is a widespread version of BJJ's past, which you'll see on any number of club websites, so it does have plenty of precedent. The dubious myth about jiu jitsu originating 'with the monks in India' is repeated, granting jiu jitsu an unlikely five thousand year lineage. Walder also finds time to sketch out the history, though less successfully than Da Silva and Semple, and not up to the benchmark standard (judo quibbles aside) of John Danaher’s work in Mastering Jujitsu. In his opening section, Walder makes the important point that “simply reading this book is not enough, as knowing and doing are totally different concepts.” As he goes on to say, “to become proficient in BJJ and have a true understanding of how each technique works, it is necessary to couple your mental knowledge with physical action.” I also liked his emphasis on staying relaxed and focusing on technique, which is something I very much strive to do in training. Helpfully, that also means Beneville can refer to people simply as ‘white’ and ‘blue’. I much prefer Beneville’s consistent, neat approach, which is one person in white and the other in blue for the entire book. That is possible because they’ve all been cropped, so only the demonstrating figures remain, rather than the usual superfluous background of a gym and mats.Ī minor flaw was that Walder and his uke didn’t stick to the same gi for the whole book: most of it is spent with Walder in a dark brown gi, but towards the end he switches to white, while his partner has a couple of different colours (presumably because the photographs were shot over a long period). In contrast to every other instructional book I’ve read up to this point, the pictures are not set into squares: instead, each photo is carefully fitted within a sequence, so that heads, knees and arms are slotted under backs, as well as around the text. There are plenty of them, attractively laid out and large, with details highlighted on certain techniques (e.g., trapping their lower leg with your foot for the bridge and roll). Having said that, it is still smaller than the average BJJ book, because Walder is economical with photographs. His offering appeared a few years after Ricardo Da Silva's book (BJJ: A Training Manual, which I reviewed earlier), its format closer to the typically bigger dimensions of most BJJ manuals, meaning that unlike Silva's book, you would struggle to fit this in your pocket. Walder is a pioneer in British BJJ, and among the first Brits to venture abroad to learn from the Gracies (I think Rick Young was the very first, in 1989). Available to buy here (or in the US, here).įull Review: Last Christmas, one of the numerous BJJ books I received was by an instructor based here in the UK. Walder packs in plenty of large, clear photographs, coupled with sensible advice on how to approach training and execute specific techniques. Short Review: This is a relatively compact and well illustrated introduction to BJJ, with details on all the basic techniques a beginner will need in the early stages of their training. 8/11/2023 0 Comments Jessica vu colored contactsAvailability of these details depend on how private celebrities are, and because of that we may not know some facts. While this sounds great, it also reduces browsers to little more than different user interfaces on top of the same thing. They care less about making a great browser on iOS but more about letting their existing users tap into their current ecosystem on iOS.Īre you using Edge on Windows? No problem, you can download Edge on iOS, and all your passwords, bookmarks, and tabs are there. For example, bookmark sharing with the desktop version of your browser.Īnd that is precisely why other browser manufacturers are willing to bother with this mess in the first place. All you need to do is provide a friendly user interface and maybe integrate with your ecosystem. Your app does not need to worry about that at all. WebKit handles all the actual loading, parsing and rendering. You provide the framework with a configuration object and need to handle some events it sends your way. Apple provides an WebView that allows apps to embed WebKit in your app with relatively little effort. Meme created by The great equaliser: the system WebViewīut how can you use that one authorised version of WebKit? There is a framework for that. Even though WebKit is open-source, you can’t modify or improve that version and use that in your app. In fact, it must use the system-provided WebKit framework. The reality is that apps in the App Store need to be reviewed and approved by Apple, and according to the App Store Review Guidelines:Ģ.5.6 Apps that browse the web must use the appropriate WebKit framework and WebKit Javascript.Īnd that is final. It might require some effort porting the rendering engine to iOS, but I know that some browsers would like to put in that work, but sadly they are not allowed to. It’s not that these rendering engines can’t run on iOS. Or look at Firefox, which uses the Gecko rendering engine on all platforms. On Android, Windows and even macOS, they are using the Chromium rendering engine. On other platforms, this is not the case. You may not realise that all browsers on iOS are required to use the same rendering engine as Safari. |
